The Missing Watch

There once was a farmer who discovered that he had lost his watch in the barn. It was no ordinary watch because it had sentimental value for him.

After searching high and low among the hay for a long while; he gave up and enlisted the help of a group of children playing outside the barn.

He promised them that the person who found it would be rewarded.

Hearing this, the children hurried inside the barn, went through and around the entire stack of hay but still could not find the watch. Just when the farmer was about to give up looking for his watch, a little boy went up to him and asked to be given another chance.

The farmer looked at him and thought, "Why not? After all, this kid looks sincere enough."

So the farmer sent the little boy back in the barn. After a while the little boy came out with the watch in his hand! The farmer was both happy and surprised and so he asked the boy how he succeeded where the rest had failed.

The boy replied, "I did nothing but sit on the ground and listen. In the silence, I heard the ticking of the watch and just looked for it in that direction."

Moral: A peaceful mind can think better than a worked up mind.

The Burnt Biscuit

Another nice story I read and would like to share ...............

WhenI was a kid, my mom would prepare special breakfast every now and then. And Iremember one night in particular, after a long, hard day at work. On thatevening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremelyburned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyonenoticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and askme how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but Ido remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit and eat everybite!

WhenI got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to mydad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never forget what he said: Honey, I loveburned biscuits.

Laterthat night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really likedhis biscuits burned.

Hewrapped me in his arms and said, Your Momma put in a hard day at work today andshe's real tired. And besides - a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone! Youknow, life is full of imperfect things.....and imperfect people. I'm not thebest at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just likeeveryone else.

WhatI've learned over the years is that learning to accept each others' faults -and choosing to celebrate each others' differences - is one of the mostimportant keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

Andthat's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the good, the bad,and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. Because in theend, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where aburnt biscuit isn't a deal-breaker!

Wecould extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is the base ofany relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!

Bitter Reality

As thedream of most parents I had acquired a degree in SoftwareEngineering and joined a company based in USA, the land of braves andopportunity. When I arrived in the USA, it was as if a dream had cometrue.

Here atlast I was in the place where I want to be. I decided I would be stayingin this country for about Five years in which time I would haveearned enough money to settle down in India.

Myfather was a government employee and after his retirement, the only assethe could acquire was a decent one bedroom flat.

Iwanted to do something more than him. I started feeling homesick andlonely as the time passed. I used to call home and speak to my parentsevery week using cheap international phone cards. Two years passed, twoyears of Burgers at McDonald's and pizzas and discos and 2 years watchingthe foreign exchange rate getting happy whenever the Rupee value wentdown.

FinallyI decided to get married. Told my parents that I have only 10 days ofholidays and everything must be done within these 10 days. I got my ticketbooked in the cheapest flight. Was jubilant and was actually enjoyinghopping for gifts for all my friends back home. If I miss anyone thenthere will be talks. After reaching home I spent home one week goingthroughall the photographs of girls and as the time wasgetting shorter I was forced to select one candidate.

In-lawstold me, to my surprise, that I would have to get married in 2-3 days, asI will not get anymore holidays. After the marriage, it was time to returnto USA, after giving some money to my parents and telling the neighbors tolook afterthem, we returnedto USA.

My wifeenjoyed this country for about two months and then she started feelinglonely. The frequency of calling India increased to twice in a weeksometimes 3 times a week. Our savings started diminishing.

Aftertwo more years we started to have kids. Two lovely kids, a boy and a girl,were gifted to us by the almighty. Every time I spoke to my parents, theyasked me to come to India so that they can see their grand-children.

Every year I decideto go to India. But part work part monetary conditions prevented it. Yearswent by and visiting India was a distant dream. Then suddenly one day Igot a message that my parents were seriously sick. I tried butI couldn't get any holidays and thus could not go to India ... The next message I got was my parents had passed away and asthere was no one to do the last rights, the society members haddone whatever they could. I was depressed. My parents had passed awaywithout seeing their grand children.

Aftercouple more years passed away, much to my children's dislike and mywife's joy we returned to India to settle down.

Istarted to look for a suitable property, but to my dismay my savings wereshort and the property prices had gone up during all these years. Ihad to return to the USA.

My wiferefused to come back with me and my children refused to stay in India. My 2children and I returned to US after promising my wife I would be back forgood after two years.

Timepassed by, my daughter decided to get married to an American and my sonwas happy living in USA... I decided that had enough and wound-up everythingand returned to India... I had just enough money to buy a decent 02bedroom flat in a well-developed locality.

Now Iam 60 years old and the only time I go out of the flat is for the routinevisit to the nearby temple. My faithful wife has also left me and gone tothe holy abode.

Sometimes

Iwondered was it worth all this?

My father, evenafter staying in India,

Had ahouse to his name and I too have the same nothing more.

I lostmy parents and children for just ONE EXTRA BEDROOM.

Lookingout from the window I see a lot of children dancing.

Thisdamned cable TV has spoiled our new generation and these children arelosing their values and culture because of it.

I getoccasional cards from my children asking I am alright.

Well atleast they remember me.

Nowperhaps after I die it will be the neighbors again who will be performingmy last rights, God Bless them.

But thequestion still remains 'was all this worth it?'

I am still searching for an answer.................!!!

A Touching Story from a father :

My wife called, 'How long will you be with thatnewspaper? Will you come here and make your darling daughter eat her food?'

I tossed the paper away and rushed to the scene. Myonly daughter Sindu looked frightened.

Tears were welling up in her eyes. In front of her was a bowl filled to itsbrim with Curd Rice. Sindu is a nice child, quite intelligent for her age. Shehas just turned eight. She particularly detested Curd Rice. My mother and mywife are orthodox, and believe firmly in the 'cooling effects' of Curd Rice! Icleared my throat, and picked up the bowl.

'Sindu, darling,why don't you take a few mouthful of this Curd Rice? Just forDad's sake, dear.

Sindu softened a bit, and wiped her tears with the back of her hands.

'OK, Dad. I will eat - not just a few mouthfuls, but the whole lot of this.

But, you should...' Sindu hesitated. 'Dad, if I eat this entire curd Rice, willyou give me whatever I ask for?'....

Oh sure, darling'.... 'Promise?'......... 'Promise'.

I covered the pink soft hand extended by my daughter with mine, and clinchedthe deal.

'Ask Mom also to give a similar promise', my daughter insisted.

My wife put her hand on Sindu's, muttering 'Promise'. Now I became a bitanxious.

'Sindu dear, you shouldn't insist on getting a computer or any such expensiveitems. Dad does not have that kind of money right now. OK?'

'No, Dad. I do not want anything expensive'.

Slowly and painfully, she finished eating the whole quantity.

I was silently angry with my wife and my mother for forcing my child eatsomething that she detested. After the ordeal was through, Sindu came to mewith her eyes wide with expectation. All our attention was on her.

'Dad, I want to have my head shaved off, this Sunday!' was her demand.

'Atrocious!' shouted my wife, 'A girl child having her head shaved off?Impossible!' 'Never in our family!' my mother rasped.

'She has been watching too much of television. Our culture is getting totallyspoiled with these TV programs!'

Sindu darling, why don't you ask for something else? We will be sad seeing youwith a clean-shaven head.'

'No, Dad. I do not want anything else', Sindu said with finality.

'Please, Sindu, why don't you try to understand our feelings?'

I tried to plead with her.

'Dad, you saw how difficult it was for me to eat that Curd Rice'.

Sindu was in tears. 'And you promised to grant me whatever I ask for.

Now, you are going back on your words. Was it not you who told me the story ofKing Harishchandra, and its moral that we should honor our promises no matterwhat?'

It was time for me to call the shots.
'Our promise must be kept.'
'Are you out your mind?' chorused my mother and wife.

'No. If we go back on our promises, she will never learn to honor her own.

Sindu, your wish will be fulfilled.'

With her head clean-shaven, Sindu had a round-face, and her eyes looked big andbeautiful.

On Monday morning, I dropped her at her school. It was a sight to watch myhairless Sindu walking towards her classroom. She turned around and waved. Iwaved back with a smile. Just then, a boy alighted from a car, and shouted,'Sinduja, please wait for me!'

What struck me was the hairless head of that boy.
'May be, that is the in-stuff', I thought. 'Sir, your daughter Sinduja is greatindeed!' Without introducing herself, a lady got out of the car, andcontinued,' That boy who is walking along with your daughter is my son Harish.He is suffering from... ... leukemia.' She paused to muffle her sobs.

Harish could not attend the school for the whole of the last month. He lost allhis hair due to the side effects of the chemotherapy. He refused to come backto school fearing the unintentional but cruel teasing of the schoolmates.

'Sinduja visited him last week, and promised him that she will take care of theteasing issue.

But, I never imagined she would sacrifice her lovely hair for the sake of myson! Sir, you and your wife are blessed to have such a noble soul as yourdaughter.'

I stood transfixed. And then, I wept. 'My little Angel, you are teaching me howself-less real love is!'

7. Do Not Bite Off More Than You Can Chew:

Why take on additional loads that may create more worries? You cannot gain peace of mind by expanding your external activities. You would benefit bygradually increasing the period of daily meditation. You may think that this will interfere with your daily work. On the contrary, thiswill increase your efficiency and youwill be able to produce better results in less time.

9. Never Leave The Mind Vacant:

An empty mind is the devil's workshop. All evil actions start in the vacant mind. Keep your mind occupied in something positive, something worthwhile. Actively followa hobby. Do something that holds yourinterest. You must decide what you value more: money or peace of mind. Your hobby, like social work or religious work, may not always earn you more money, but you will have a sense of fulfillment and achievement. Even when you are resting physically, occupy yourself in healthy reading or mental chanting of God's name.

Do not waste time in protracted wondering " Should I or shouldn't I?" Days, weeks, months, and years maybe wasted in that futile mental debating. You can neverplan enough because you can never anticipate all future happenings. Value your time and do the things that need to be done. It does not matter if you fail the first time. You can learn from yourmistakes and succeed the next time.Sitting back and worrying will lead to nothing. Learn from your mistakes,but do not brood over the past. DO NOT REGRET. But, because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get thespoons back into their mouths.
